What Are You Becoming Next?

There’s a question I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

What are you becoming next?

It feels particularly relevant as I’ve recently turned 50.

For so many women, the first half of our lives is shaped by roles, responsibilities and expectations.

We build careers. Raise children. Support partners. Care for parents. Build homes and businesses. Become the dependable one, the capable one, the person who gets things done.

And somewhere along the way, it can become difficult to distinguish between who we really are and who we learned we needed to be.

Then midlife arrives.

Things begin to shift.

Our bodies change. Our relationships change. Our children need us differently. Work that once fitted can start to feel uncomfortable. Things we were willing to tolerate for years become harder to ignore.

And questions that may have been quietly whispering in the background start getting louder.

Is this still what I want?

Who am I now?

What do I want the rest of my life to look like?

What am I becoming next?

Midlife can be an extraordinary turning point

In my work as a career coach, I spend a lot of time with women in this exact space.

They'll often arrive telling me they're stuck.

They know something needs to change, but they don't necessarily know what they want instead.

And I understand that feeling.

When you've spent decades building a life around responsibilities, expectations and decisions made by earlier versions of yourself, being asked “What do you want?” can be surprisingly difficult to answer.

But I believe this stage of life gives us an incredible opportunity. An opportunity to tell ourselves the truth. To pay attention to what lights us up. To listen to our bodies and our intuition. To question the assumptions we've been carrying about what someone our age should do. And to begin consciously creating the next chapter of our lives. Not perfectly. Not with a ten-year plan. But with a greater sense of who we are and what matters to us now.

This is where BECOMING began

A few months ago, I started having conversations with three incredible women — Rachael, Robyn and Yin — about this stage of life.

We each work with women in very different ways, yet we kept coming back to the same thing.

So much is changing for women at midlife — internally and externally — and all of it is connected.

How we feel in our bodies affects how we show up at work.

How we see ourselves influences what we believe we're capable of.

What we wear can change how we inhabit a room.

Our intuition can tell us something isn't right long before our logical mind is willing to admit it.

Our careers, bodies, identity, confidence, style, purpose and sense of possibility don't exist in separate little boxes.

They are all part of us.

And out of those conversations came BECOMING: The Next Chapter Is Yours.

An evening for the woman you're becoming

On Thursday 22 October, we're bringing women together at VYC in Auckland for three hours dedicated to exploring what this next chapter could hold.

We'll explore four deeply interconnected parts of the midlife experience:

Identity — reconnecting with who you are underneath all the roles, responsibilities and expectations you’ve carried, and exploring who you’re becoming in this next chapter.

Hormone health — Understand what's actually happening in your body through menopause and how you can support yourself through this stage of life.

Career & purpose — Explore what you want from your work and life now, and what is still possible for your future.

Personal style — Rediscover how you want to express yourself and show up in the world as the woman you are now.

And career and possibility is, of course, where I come in.

Your past doesn't get to dictate your future

One of the things I most want women to leave BECOMING with is renewed belief in what's possible for their future lives and careers.

Because I see how quickly we can start narrowing our own possibilities as we get older.

I'm too old to start again.

I've been doing this for 25 years — what else could I possibly do?

Who's going to employ me at my age?

It's too late to retrain.

I can't afford to make a mistake now.

We can mistake the life we've already lived for evidence of the life we're required to keep living.

Yet you have decades of experience, strengths, relationships, wisdom, resilience and self-knowledge that your younger self simply didn't have.

At 40, 50 or 60, you are not done.

There is still so much life ahead of you.

And you get to have a say in what you do with it.

Meet the woman you're becoming next

We'll finish BECOMING with a beautiful guided visualisation that will take you forward to meet her.

The future version of you.

How does she feel?

What does she know that you don't quite trust yet?

How does she spend her days?

What has she stopped apologising for?

What has she finally given herself permission to want?

What does she want you to know?

Meet her. Feel her. Become her.

Maybe you've already started to feel her tugging at you.

That sense that something is shifting.

That you're ready for something different.

That there are parts of yourself you'd like to reclaim and other parts you're only just beginning to discover.

Give yourself an evening to listen to that.

Come on your own. Bring a friend. Bring your sister. Bring the women you've been having these conversations with already.
